In July 1864, Confederate forces raided the edge of Washington, and President Abraham Lincoln rode out to a fort to watch and stood up on the parapet, stovepipe hat and all, in plain view of Confederate sharpshooters. It remains the only time a sitting U.S. president came under direct enemy fire. As the story goes, a young Union officer — a 23-year-old Oliver Wendell Holmes, then an aide-de-camp, gave what advice to Lincoln?

Hint: Though the tale is very likely apocryphal, and many people claimed to give Lincoln similar advice, the story has entered American folklore.
