Stormers XXIII coach Tom Dawson-Squibb was pleased with his side’s patient approach during their 50-26 win against the Vodacom Bulls XV at Loftus on Friday.

The visitors scored five tries to take a commanding 33-7 lead into half-time before withstanding a Bulls fightback after the break and finishing strongly to claim a seven-try bonus-point victory.

“We’re very proud of it,” Dawson-Squibb said. “I think one must realise the scoreboard is one thing – it’s the most important thing – but I was very happy with the performance.

“Particularly that first half. We had to weather a bit of a storm up front and then we managed to put in a really good performance.

“I thought we put a lot of pressure on them, and that’s the thing we’ve wanted to do all season. So, yeah, very, very happy with that.”

NOMLOMO: Bulls weren’t at the races

Dawson-Squibb was particularly encouraged by the Stormers’ ability to turn opportunities inside the Bulls’ 22 into points.

“I think our 22 conversion rate was much better. A lot of that is about patience, and we showed good patience. I think that was the most exciting thing.

“It wasn’t anything fancy. It was actually just doing the basic things well and showing patience, and that allowed us to convert.”

The five log points kept the Stormers’ Currie Cup semi-final hopes alive heading into the final round, when they will travel to Ellis Park to face the Lions, who drew 22-22 against the Sharks XV in Pietermaritzburg on Friday night.

“We know that the Lions pose a big attacking threat,” said Dawson-Squibb. “We’ve seen it throughout the competition.

“They’re playing at Ellis Park and they pose a lot of threats, so we’ll prepare like that, which is exciting.”
