The Sharks have reportedly signed a Vodacom Bulls powerhouse to replace Stormers-bound loosehead Ntuthuko Mchunu next season.

According to Planet Rugby, Simphiwe Matanzima put pen to paper on a Sharks deal last week in what represents a key acquisition for John Plumtree to fill the void left by Mchunu’s departure.

Matanzima has made just six appearances for the Bulls this season. Despite limited playing time, the 27-year-old featured off the bench in recent victories over Munster and Glasgow Warriors.

The move strengthens the Sharks’ front row resources where Springbok Ox Nche remains first-choice loosehead. Questions surround the future of veteran Trevor Nyakane, whose season ended in February with a ruptured Achilles rupture, while 34-year-old Ruan Dreyer has also battled injuries.

Planet Rugby suggests the Sharks, who have already secured the services of Lions winger Edwill van der Merwe, are targeting additional signings at scrumhalf and fullback.
