Damian Willemse’s world-class display inspired the Springboks to a statement victory over England despite a familiar first-half wobble, writes MARK KEOHANE.

Writing for the Sunday Times, Keohane says the Boks exploded out of the blocks at Ellis Park on Saturday before briefly losing control, only to restore order with a composed and dominant second-half performance that underlined their status as world champions.

PICK YOUR MVP: Boks vs England

“Willemse was world class at fullback and comfortably the star of the show,” he writes.

Keohane hails the fullback’s all-round excellence, from his commanding work under the high ball and superb tactical kicking to a crucial try-saving tackle and powerful carries. His influence allowed the Boks to dominate territory even before their set-piece clicked into gear.

Keohane also praises Rassie Erasmus for another bold selection masterclass after late withdrawals forced Paul de Villiers and Cameron Hanekom into the starting XV.

The coach’s willingness to reshuffle his pack, empty his bench early and even use André Esterhuizen at flank demonstrated the depth and flexibility within the squad.

“Erasmus has always been bold in his selections, and the second half was the most comforting example of just how well he knows his players and just how much he trusts them.”

RASSIE: Boks had to be honest at half-time

Keohane believes the biggest takeaway was how the Springboks responded after England’s late first-half rally. Unlike the collapse against Australia at Ellis Park last year, the Boks regained control immediately after the break before overpowering England in the closing stages.

For Keohane, it was a victory fashioned with intelligence, depth and authority – one that reaffirmed why the Springboks remain the benchmark in world rugby.
