Group lateral moves are still all the rage in Biglaw, and Crowell & Moring ought to know — the Am Law 100 firm just gobbled up a group of more than 40 lawyers, complete with 16 partners, from Reed Smith, including a former member of the firm’s executive committee.
As noted by the National Law Journal, earlier today, Crowell confirmed that announced that a 16-partner team and two dozen associates from Reed Smith would be joining the firm, growing its health care litigation practice in several of its offices across the country and creating the “premier health practice in the country.” Here are some additional details:
[Martin] Bishop, who will co-chair Crowell’s health care group, joins the firm’s Chicago office along with partners Steven Hamilton, Rebecca Hanson, Thomas Hardy, Daniel Hofmeister, Alexandra Lucas, Jason Mayer, Kevin Tessier, and Bryan Webster. …
In addition, partners Michelle Cheng, Lorenzo Gasparetti, Junga Kim, Amir Shlesinger, and Kenneth Smersfelt will join in Los Angeles, and Karen Braje will join in San Francisco.
Meanwhile, partner Scott Williams will be based in Dallas, where Crowell is opening an office. Crowell is still scouting an office space in Dallas, according to [Crowell chair Phil] Inglima.
Inglima went on to say that this group lateral move represents a “a great opportunity to take a major step forward in the market,” and that “there are really endless possibilities for what we can do for clients with this team at the forefront, and that, to us, was an extremely exciting prospect.”
Crowell’s health care practice will officially be 100 lawyers strong in the wake of its lateral raid on Reed Smith.
“We’ve worked together, we’ve competed with each other, all the things that you do in a specialized industry,” Bishop told the NLJ in an interview. “And it got to the point where I think we all realized that our clients would be best served if we got together.”
Congratulations to Crowell & Moring on its successful group lateral hire, and best of luck to everyone who will soon be integrated into the firm’s health care practice.
