Jimmy Stonehouse believes the incredible depth of talent in South African rugby is providing renewed hope for smaller unions such as the Pumas.
Stonehouse told Netwerk24 that it is encouraging to see teams outside the traditional powerhouses investing in their squads and becoming increasingly competitive.
He pointed to the likes of the Boland Cavaliers who enjoyed a strong 2025 season under Hawies Fourie, reaching the Currie Cup Premier Division semi-finals, while South Western Districts recently made a statement by appointing former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.
“I think it’s good for rugby in the country that teams like SWD are improving,” Stonehouse said.
“Boland also strengthened last year and signed four players who were with us. It shows there are a lot of good players in South Africa and plenty of opportunities if unions are prepared to back themselves.”

The Pumas coach believes the SA Cup, which starts on 7 March and serves as a qualifier for the Currie Cup Premier Division, plays a vital role in spreading opportunity. The top four teams in the SA Cup will advance to the Premier Division alongside the Lions, Bulls, Sharks and Western Province, who are guaranteed participation.
Stonehouse added that there is a possibility the ‘big four’ could also feature in the SA Cup this year, which would help keep URC squad players match-fit during the season.
“There’s real value in having strong competition across the board. More competitive unions raise the standard for everyone,” he said.
While details around this year’s SA Cup are still to be finalised by SA Rugby, the Pumas have already begun their preparations after returning to training on Monday.
