Hoërskool Garsfontein celebrated a third successive Noordvaal Cup title, while there were also wins for Rondebosch and Wynberg in Cape Town on Saturday.

Garsies’ lethal back three proved the difference as the Pretoria school powered to a 30-19 victory against Joburg’s Helpmekaar Kollege in the final of South Africa’s oldest schools rugby competition.

In doing so, they became the first school to lift the trophy three years in a row in the new millennium, and only the fifth in the competition’s 105-year history – joining Potchefstroom Volkskool, Pretoria Boys’ High, Zeerust High and Affies (Affies hold the record with five consecutive titles).

Garsies, who trailed 12-5 at the break, scored five tries, including two by winger Junaide Stuart.

In Cape Town, outside centre Aluthi Wesi – who has also played No 8 this year – scored two tries as Rondebosch did the double against Bishops with a 28-22 win at the Piley Rees Field. Bosch also beat their biggest rivals 28-7 back in June.

In the other big southern suburbs clash, scrumhalf Morné Noble and fullback Laeeq Davids both scored twice in Wynberg’s 41-10 victory against SACS at the Hawthornden Field. Wynberg also won June’s meeting between the sides at the Memorial A Field, 21-10.
