Springbok lock RG Snyman hails the influence of coach Rassie Erasmus in motivating players to consistently perform at a high level.

The two-time world champion and two-time URC-winning lock, Snyman holds Erasmus and his vision for Bok rugby in high regard.

In a podcast with former Scotland lock, Jim Hamilton, Snyman spoke of Erasmus as the ultimate motivator – someone who can get a player up for a match like no one else can.

”You think, ‘Okay, I can’t feel more motivated for this game. This is the most motivated I can ever be for a game.’ And then the next week you feel the same way again – even more motivated sometimes.

“So that’s incredible to know that he can or he consistently does it at such a level that it ultimately brings the best out of us.”

With South Africa dominating a large chunk of the world sporting arena at the moment, Hamilton prompted Snyman about what makes South Africans different.

”I think there’s a mindset of people that is a little bit different and it feels very driven in a way that I haven’t really come across in many other places. It feels like people are very much like ‘**** it, I need to go for this, and I’m going to do this with everything I have and I’m going to give it my all.”’

Snyman says that while he’s enjoying the benefits of professional rugby – seeing the world and visiting new places – there’s no place quite like home and he hasn’t ruled out a return to SA before calling time on his career.

”Do I see myself ending up back in South Africa? Definitely.”
