All Blacks coach Scott Robertson has revealed it was his call to stage Saturday’s Rugby Championship match with the Springboks at Eden Park.

New Zealand have not lost a Test at their Auckland fortress since 1994, with their unbeaten run standing at 50 matches.

But the world champions will have the chance to end that streak when they return to the venue for the first time since 2013.

KEO: Boks must ditch new style for Eden Park upset

Robertson explained that he embraced the challenge when offered a say on the fixture list.

“You look back and you look at the stats, and there’s a story behind it. They asked me last year when I took over the job, ‘these are the Tests, where can you play them?’ I said: ‘It’s been a long time [at Eden Park], let’s do it’,” he told reporters.

For Robertson, the showdown is about much more than records.

“These are the occasions you have to look forward to as a rugby player, as a team and a country. That’s why there’s so much interest in it,” he said. “Probably the big thing, it’s Saturday night that matters. Those records were made on those nights, on those days, so we’re looking forward to the occasion.”
