Lions flank Ruan Venter has copped a lengthy suspension for a shoulder-to-the-head tackle on Sharks fullback Aphelele Fassi.

The incident occurred in the 38th minute of the Vodacom URC match at Kings Park last Saturday. Venter received a yellow card, upgraded to a 20-minute red upon review.

The 23-year-old has been banned for four Lions matches, against Lyon (10 January, Challenge Cup), Perpignan (17 January, Challenge Cup), Ospreys (23 January, URC) and Bulls (31 January, URC).

In Venter’s responses to the judicial officer overseeing the disciplinary process, Rhian Williams, he had accepted that he had committed an act of foul play which warranted a red card.

Williams found that the incident met the red-card threshold, with entry of mid-range warranting six weeks.

Venter received two weeks mitigation due to his acceptance, remorse and exemplary conduct throughout the disciplinary process which results in a four-game suspension.
