Heyneke Meyer’s SWD squad for the next edition of the SA Cup is taking shape, with the signing of a former Stormers pivot.

Netwerk24 reports the Eagles head coach has secured the signature of Abner van Reenen, a player who Meyer regards as a key element in SWD’s resurgence.

The 27-year-old arrives from Russian outfit Lokomotiv Penza and brings with him a level of experience and pedigree that has been sorely missing from a young SWD squad.

A former SA Schools and Junior Springbok, the Paarl Boys’ High old boy has previously represented Western Province, the Stormers, the Cheetahs as well as Italian side Rovigo.

Meyer made it clear that landing an experienced No 10 was non-negotiable.

“We needed an experienced flyhalf who has played at a high level,” Meyer said. “Abner is still young enough, has started training with us and looks really good. He is a class player.”

The former Springbok coach believes the move could reignite Van Reenen’s career at a high level.

“I think he is good enough to play in the URC again soon,” Meyer added.

Van Reenen is one of several notable new faces at SWD, alongside former Cheetahs utility back Andell Loubser and the returning Xavier Swartbooi.

“I also want to give players with huge talent, who maybe never got a chance or slipped through the cracks, an opportunity,” Meyer said.
