Former Springbok boss Heyneke Meyer could make a return to coaching in South Africa.
According to Rapport, the 57-year-old is in talks with the union where it all started for him as a coach almost 30 years ago.
Contract negotiations are reportedly at an advanced stage between Meyer and South Western Districts and he could bring some top personnel and partners as well to help the union get out of the mess it finds itself in – on and off the pitch.
The Eagles finished this season’s Currie Cup First Division fifth out of six teams, having registered just one win.
In 1998, the team was in a similar position when Meyer was brought in, and his impact was immediate. A year later, the Eagles reached the Currie Cup semi-finals.
Following his stint as Bok coach – where he led the team to a third-place finish at the 2015 World Cup – Meyer coached in France with Stade Francais and in the USA with the Houston SaberCats.
But according to a source close to Meyer, he’s keen to return to coaching and wants to impart his knowledge in South Africa rather than overseas.
“He really wants to make a difference in the lives of people in South Africa,” the source told Rapport. “He’ll come full circle if he were to return to coach the Eagles.”
