Bryan Habana says the current Springbok team is the greatest in South Africa’s history.

Rassie Erasmus’ Boks have won back-to-back World Cups and consecutive Castle Rugby Championships, and also dominated world rugby with a brand of rugby which mixes traditional physical dominance with an exciting evolution of attacking play.

Speaking to News24 as an ambassador for LIV Golf’s Stinger GC, Habana ascribed the current success down to the support systems Erasmus has put in place to bring in the required expertise and transmitting his vision to the players.

“He has never sort of stayed stagnant in by doing the same things repeatedly over and over again,” said Habana, who scored 67 tries in 124 Tests and lifted the Webb Ellis Cup in 2007. “He’s brought in phenomenal expertise, Jacques Nienaber initially, and then he brought in the likes of Daan Human. We’ve got Tony Brown, Felix Jones and Jerry Flannery.”

Habana, IRB Player of the Year in 2007, also had high praise for the current crop of Springbok wings.

“Cheslin is just box office, one of the best the game, not just South Africa, has ever seen. But then there’s Kurt-Lee Arendse, Ethan Hooker and Edwill van der Merwe that’s really pushing the boundaries.

“Canan Moodie can go at centre and at wing … for Rassie to have that luxury of world-class international wingers is just brilliant.

“Cheslin has set the standard that few [have done] before him, and [those coming after] after him will have to be able to measure up to an amazing player.”
