Edinburgh coach Sean Everitt has provided an update on Duhan van der Merwe after the South African winger limped off in Friday’s 43-0 Vodacom URC victory over Benetton.

Van der Merwe, who crossed for the opening try of the match, left the field early in the second half with what appeared to be a foot injury, raising alarms with Scotland’s opening Test of the November window just two weeks away.

Everitt confirmed after the match that the issue was a bruised heel, and said he was optimistic about the 30-year-old’s availability for next weekend’s clash against Cardiff.

“We’ll take a look at that on Monday,” said Everitt. “It’s not the first time we’ve had bruised heels. Darcy [Graham] struggled with that last year as well. But we hope that he’ll be good to go next week.”

Van der Merwe’s early strike set the tone for Edinburgh’s dominant display and underlined his importance to both club and country.

“Duhan scored a great try,” Everitt added. “It just shows when you get the ball in his hands with a bit of space, it’s really good. That was our plan today – if we could get the ball into the 15s, we’d have an opportunity against them.”
