Players from the Cheetahs team that shocked the Bulls in the 2005 Currie Cup final at Loftus are set to take part in a legends match between the teams.
The legends sides will face off on Sunday, 26 October as a curtain-raiser for the Cheetahs’ match against Georgia’s Black Lions in Bloemfontein.
Among those returning in Cheetahs colours is Philip Burger, the electric wing. Now 45, Burger joked that the speed that made him famous has been passed on to his children.
“My knees are also not what they used to be,” he told Netwerk24. “It’s not going to be that serious – maybe like a Barbarians match.”
Other 2005 Currie Cup champs who could feature include scrumhalf Falie Oelschig, whose pinpoint kick set up Meyer Bosman’s match-winning try in the final, and former Bok prop Ollie le Roux, depending on his availability.
Bok hooker Naka Drotské, who captained the Cheetahs in 2005, will coach the legends.
Possible Cheetahs Legends squad:
Forwards – Kevin Stevens, Kobus Caldo, Nelio de Sá, Ollie le Roux, Marnus Briedenhann, Ockie van Zyl, Christmas Dumezweni, Darren Nel.
Backs – JB Heckroodt, Sarel Pretorius, Falie Oelschig, Ferdi Wesso, Philip Burger, JW Jonker, Joubert Engelbrecht, Hendrik Meyer, Herman Pretorius, Isak Job, Danie Dames, MJ Smith.
