Cardiff have bolstered their backline with the signing of a Bulls player, who could be available for the Welsh side’s URC clash with Zebre on 29 November.

Cornel Smit arrives at the Arms Park capable of covering centre, flyhalf and wing – a level of adaptability that Cardiff boss Corniel van Zyl believes will make him an invaluable asset.

Van Zyl hailed the 28-year-old as a “fantastic addition”, emphasising both his rugby intelligence and his proven pedigree in South Africa’s top-flight competitions.

“He’s a versatile, mature and intelligent player with true quality at 10, centre and wing,” Van Zyl said. “He’s competed at a high level in South Africa for a number of years and brings the sort of experience and composure that will really complement our backline. Everything we’ve heard about his professionalism and character has been outstanding.”

Smit made his name as a dependable and creative midfield presence, but his ability to shift seamlessly across the backline has long been one of his standout traits.

The player himself expressed his excitement about the move and the opportunity to make an immediate impact.

“I can’t wait to get started and contribute on and off the field,” Smit said.

He links up with his new teammates right away and could be in line for his Cardiff debut in Parma.
