A Springbok wing has signed with French third-division side Narbonne until the end of the season.

The club confirmed the move this week, describing Aphiwe Dyantyi as a “powerful and hard-running” back capable of playing at centre or on the wing.

Dyantyi, who burst onto the international scene in 2018 and won the World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year award, will now ply his trade in France’s Nationale competition as Narbonne look to finish their campaign strongly.

Dyantyi’s international career effectively ended when he was handed a four-year ban for doping in 2019 after failing to prove that he took multiple performance-enhancing drugs in error.

Dyantyi returned to rugby in 2023 but made just nine appearances for the Sharks before heading to Pretoria. However, he again failed to get regular game time, earning just seven caps for the Vodacom Bulls.

Still, Narbonne said the 30-year-old is recognised for his “speed, ability to break the line and game awareness” and that his arrival comes at a key moment in their season.

“After returning to the field and stringing together matches in recent seasons, the player is now part of a solid sporting trajectory,” the club said in a statement.

The signing underlines Narbonne’s ambition to attack the season run-in “with ambition, high standards and determination”.
