An exciting young playmaker, originally from Ceres in the Western Cape, trained with the Blitzboks in Stellenbosch this week.
And Sharks U21 flyhalf Luan Giliomee will rejoin the squad in early January ahead of the resumption of the SVNS series, according to Rapport.
The 19-year-old has been on the Blitzboks’ radar for some time. He captained Charlie Hofmeyr High School in Ceres to an unbeaten season last year and played for the SA U18 Sevens team at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, where the team won a bronze medal.
“He has actually been watched since school,” said Blitzboks coach Philip Snyman. Marius Schoeman [who was SA Rugby’s high-performance manager of sevens rugby] identified him.”
“Neil [Powell, former Blitzboks coach and director of rugby at the Sharks] and I have been talking about him for a while. We thought now was the right time to get him involved.”

Giliomee has represented the SA Schools A team last year and this year helped the Sharks U21s win the national title. He also plays fullback and even slotted in at scrumhalf for the SA U19 Academy team against Ireland recently.
Giliomee is on loan from the Sharks to the Blitzboks due to injuries to Selvyn Davids (groin) and Ronald Brown (shoulder).
The Blitzboks successfully defended their Cape Town Sevens title and are next in action in Singapore on 31 January and 1 February.
