The Vodacom Bulls are moving closer to securing a replacement for retired flyhalf Johan Goosen.

According to Rapport, the Bulls are in discussions with the Dragons over a possible move that would see Tinus de Beer return to Loftus Versfeld from Wales.

The 30-year-old, who began his senior career in Pretoria almost a decade ago, is being targeted as cover and experience at No 10 following Goosen’s decision to step away from rugby.

De Beer, a Hoërskool Waterkloof product, represented SA Schools in 2014 and the Junior Springboks the following year before making his Bulls debut in 2015.

He remained in Pretoria until 2018, but limited opportunities prompted moves to Griquas in 2019 and later the Pumas, where he enjoyed a standout season under Jimmy Stonehouse in 2022.

His form in Nelspruit earned him a move to Wales in 2023, initially with Cardiff, before joining the Dragons, where he has impressed.

Should the move happen, De Beer would slot into a playmaking group that includes Springbok veteran Handre Pollard and Keagan Johannes.

Goosen has not formally announced his retirement but the injury-plagued 33-year-old no longer trains with the Bulls and has already started a career outside of rugby where he works in the insurance industry and also farms part-time.

The Bulls also recently released Jaco van der Walt to the Cheetahs.
