Currie Cup winner Gurshwin Wehr admits he’s still pinching himself as he plays alongside some of the game’s biggest names at the Sale Sharks.

Now featuring in both the Investec Champions Cup and English Premiership, Wehr has described the loan opportunity as “remarkable”.

“I never thought I would find myself in an environment like this, but to be able to play alongside players like this is really something remarkable. I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Wehr told Rapport.

The step up has seen him share a field with England flyhalf George Ford.

“Playing with guys like that just makes me so much calmer on the field and they make things easy for you. I don’t have words to describe it. I’m ecstatic.”

Off the field, the move to Manchester has been softened by a strong South African contingent at the club, including Hyron Andrews, Ernst van Rhyn, Jacques Vermeulen, Dan du Preez, Marius Louw and Rob du Preez.

The 2025 Currie Cup triumph with Griquas remains a defining moment in Wehr’s career, and his performances have now earned him a nomination for Currie Cup Player of the Year.

“It’s every player’s dream to achieve things like this, and not many of us manage to do it,” he said.

“I’m truly grateful because I’ve worked hard. Hopefully, if it comes down to it, I could maybe be Currie Cup Player of the Year. That would open many doors for me.”
