A World Cup-winning Springbok has been appointed head coach of Harlequin Rugby Club.

Former Bok hooker Gary Botha will take charge of the Pretoria-based club from the 2026 season, in a move that signals Quins’ intent to strengthen their high-performance programme and reaffirm the role of strong clubs in South African rugby.

Botha, who was part of South Africa’s triumphant 2007 World Cup squad, brings elite playing experience and international exposure back into the local club game. His appointment is seen as a significant statement at club level, at a time when professionally run community clubs are increasingly viewed as vital to the depth and sustainability of the national system.

The former Bulls forward enjoyed a decorated playing career, winning Currie Cup and Super Rugby titles before heading overseas, where he also gained experience with English Premiership club. Since hanging up his boots, Botha has remained involved in the game, contributing within coaching and forwards-development environments abroad.

At Harlequins, Botha will oversee all 1st XV rugby operations, including performance strategy, player and coach development and match-day execution. His appointment forms part of a longer-term vision by the club to build a fully professional senior programme, with a strong emphasis on high-performance standards, clear development pathways and community impact.

Harlequins chairman Gert Mulder said Botha’s arrival marked a defining moment for the club.

“Gary brings credibility, experience and leadership at the highest level of the game. His appointment reflects our commitment to building something sustainable, competitive and aligned with where South African rugby needs to be heading.”
