A towering South African lock has taken an unusual route into the professional ranks after signing with Japan Rugby League One heavyweights the Saitama Wild Knights.
Juan Oosthuyzen came through Japan’s university system after starring for Toyo University, where his size and skill set quickly caught the attention of scouts.
Standing 2.12m tall and weighing around 130kg, he is believed to be the tallest player currently playing in Japan.
Oosthuyzen came through the Bulls academy but was unable to secure a senior contract, prompting a move abroad.

The 23-year-old said joining the Wild Knights was a major milestone in his career.
“I am truly honoured and excited to begin this new journey,” he said. “I am committed to giving my 100% for the team and our fans at all times, while bringing a positive attitude and a smile every day.”
The move could also have long-term international implications. By completing his formative rugby years in Japan, Oosthuyzen is now on a pathway that could one day make him eligible to represent the Brave Blossoms under World Rugby’s residency regulations.
