The Newcastle Red Bulls have fired a major warning shot ahead of next season, securing the signature of an All Blacks loose forward.

Hoskins Sotutu, the 2024 Super Rugby Player of the Year, will arrive at Kingston Park on a three-year contract after completing his stint with the Blues.

Sotutu’s arrival is the clearest indication yet of Newcastle’s growing ambition, with the Red Bulls continuing to add proven international quality as part of their evolving project.

The dynamic loose forward brings elite-level pedigree to the North East after a successful spell in New Zealand. He departs the Blues having made 80 appearances for the Auckland-based club, scoring 31 tries and playing a key role in their Super Rugby title triumph in 2024. Sotutu has also earned 14 Test caps for the All Blacks.

Speaking after putting pen to paper, Sotutu said Newcastle’s vision played a decisive role in his move.

“I am excited to be committing to Newcastle Red Bulls’ project moving forward, and coming to compete in th Prem week in, week out,” he said.

“The club made it clear to me how ambitious they are, and I am looking forward to getting started.

“I have enjoyed my time at the Blues and am looking to finish on a high before hitting the ground running in the North East of England.”

Newcastle sporting general manager Neil McIlroy described the signing as a statement moment for the club.

“This is a huge signing which brings major firepower into the club and sends a message around the league,” McIlroy said. “He’s an X-factor player who will make a big impact on the field and get people off their seats. This signing shows we really mean business.”
