Swys de Bruin says the Vodacom Bulls’ issues run beyond defence – and has full faith in Johan Ackermann to turn things around.
The Bulls head into Saturday’s Vodacom URC clash against the Sharks in Durban having leaked 27 tries in six URC matches and another 15 in two Investec Champions Cup outings.
While those numbers are alarming, De Bruin says the Pretoria-based franchise’s problems are more complex.

“When you’re in such a cycle of negative results, it becomes very difficult to sort out just one thing within the framework of your game plan,” the Springbok Women’s coach told Netwerk24.
“I can’t say it’s just on the defence, because for me the attack is also an aspect of their game that needs to be straightened out at the moment. Also when they have to kick and when they don’t.
“It’s a delicate balance, you know, and they’ll have to sort it out. When to keep the ball and when to play.”

According to De Bruin, players must also shoulder responsibility for the team’s four-match losing run.
“I also believe there are a few of the experienced players who need to start putting their hands up now. It’s not just the coach’s fault. Everyone, from the team manager and all the way down, needs to go and make sure he or she does the job to the best of their ability.”

Pressure has mounted on Ackermann following a 50-5 Champions Cup defeat to the Northampton Saints, but De Bruin insists patience is required.
“You know what, I have no doubt, if there is one coach now that I trust with everything I have and is impeccable in how he works, it is Ackers,” said De Bruin, who helped Ackermann turn things around at the Lions last decade, culminating in three consecutive Super Rugby final appearances.
“He definitely has a few things that he will have to sort out, but he will know what his problems are. Whether it is coaches or whether it is players, he is a very wise guy.”
