Sonwabo Sokoyi says making his Blitzboks debut in a winning Cape Town Sevens campaign was “something special”.
Called up after Mfundo Ndhlovu withdrew to join a Vodacom URC franchise, the 23-year-old delivered a series of standout performances.
He scored two tries off the bench against Great Britain on Saturday before producing the defining moment of the final against Argentina.
With the Blitzboks trailing 19-7 early in the second half, Sokoyi received the ball in space and backed his footwork – just as assistant coach Renfred Dazel had urged minutes before kick-off.
“We actually spoke about this try just before the final,” Sokoyi said. “Coach Renfred said, ‘Just play with your feet.’ So I trusted my feet and when I went past the Argentina defenders, it felt like déjà vu.”

The try shifted the momentum of the match, sparking a comeback that ended in a dramatic 21-19 victory, as Christie Grobbelaar crossed in the final minute before Ricardo Duarttee landed the conversion to seal the win.
“It is something special,” Sokoyi said. “I finally feel like I belong. I got my first cap, my first try and my first trophy. Not many players get to do that in one week.”
