A well-rested Sharks outfit arrives in Galway with momentum and new direction as they look to climb the Vodacom URC table against a desperate Connacht side. DYLAN JOHNSON reports.

After finally breaking their winless start to the season with a 29-19 victory over the Scarlets in Durban on 25 October, John Plumtree’s team sits 13th on the table with eight points from five matches.

Connacht, who fell 17-15 to Munster in round five, are just one place higher in 12th with a game in hand.

Plumtree said the one-month international break made a tangible difference to their preparations for this match.

“It’s certainly been the best pre-season we’ve had,” he explained. “Not having a game last week allowed us to prepare well, get the travel done, get the recovery part right. We’re going into the game feeling really good about our work.”

The coach also moved decisively at flyhalf, drafting in Currie Cup-winning Griquas flyhalf George Whitehead to steer the attack. Whitehead’s loan comes at a time when Siya Masuku and Jordan Hendrikse continue to battle injuries.

“I like George,” Plumtree said. “I watched him closely in the Currie Cup. He can run a game at 10, his understanding and communication are excellent. We needed a player like that right now.”

Whitehead’s arrival highlights a broader theme of the Sharks’ season, disrupted cohesion and constant change. Plumtree acknowledged the challenge but believes the squad’s potential remains clear.

“When we’re all fit, supporters will see the strength of this roster,” he said. “The cohesion hasn’t been what we wanted, but we’ve kept working.”

He also addressed his end-of-season departure while making it clear his commitment remains intact.

“My attitude is that I’ll keep going until someone tells me to stop. I’m committed to finishing strong. I love this team and it means a lot to me.”

Attention now shifts to a Connacht side known for structure, physicality and consistency at home.

“They’re organised and work hard for each other,” Plumtree warned. “We’ve got to be good defensively. They’ve got a talented player like Josh Ioane, who can run, kick and pass. Our set-piece must step up.”

Conditions in Galway may be unpredictable, but Plumtree expects a contest decided by intent.

“We won’t prepare to be cautious,” he said. “We need to be brave.”
