A Springbok hooker appears set to join Munster when his current contract expires in June next year.

Marnus van der Merwe is one of South African rugby’s hottest properties after a breakthrough international season.

While the Sharks and Lions have thrown their hats into the ring – the Joburg-based franchise particularly keen following Jaco Visagie’s retirement due to a neck injury this week – Rapport claims that the 28-year-old’s heart is set on Limerick.

Van der Merwe, who currently represents the Llanelli-based Scarlets, burst onto the Test scene in July in Mbombela, marking his debut against Georgia with a brace of tries.

He went on to earn three caps and looked comfortable at the highest level during the Rugby Championship, though he was surprisingly omitted from Rassie Erasmus’ squad for the November internationals.
