Fabien Galthié says France were punished for not taking their chances as the Springboks powered to a 32-17 victory in Paris on Saturday night.

Les Bleus led 14-6 after two early tries from winger Damian Penaud and dominated territory for much of the first half, but couldn’t convert pressure into points.

The Springboks, down to 14 men for the entire second half following Lood de Jager’s red card, were ruthless when opportunities came.

“Around the 60th minute we had three clear chances where we should have scored,” said Galthié after the match. “After that, they won penalties in midfield, pushed into our half and attacked hard with great efficiency. Their second halves are always powerful and effective. They still have the same strengths – but they’ve developed them.”

The France coach, who also captained Les Bleus during his playing days, praised his team’s effort but conceded they were beaten by a side that thrives under pressure.

“We prepare to win, but we also have to accept defeat. It’s a great team, but our players worked hard.”

Fullback Thomas Ramos echoed his coach’s sentiments, highlighting South Africa’s clinical finishing.

“We had far too many chances where we broke their line and didn’t score afterwards. They’re clinical – when they get within five metres, they score. They’re not double world champions for nothing.”
