Former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer says he knew early on that Siya Kolisi had the makings of a future leader.

It was Meyer who gave Kolisi his Test debut against Scotland in Nelspruit on 15 June 2013, with the flanker coming off the bench in the fifth minute to replace an injured Arno Botha. The 21-year-old went on to win the Man of the Match award.

Meyer told Rapport that he was immediately struck by the young loose forward’s character and influence.

“He was very popular from the start. When I initially selected him, he was a bit shy, like most juniors, but he definitely showed leadership qualities. He quickly integrated with the senior players and held his own.”

Meyer said Kolisi’s time spent with captain Jean de Villiers helped shape his leadership style.

“He learned a lot from Jean, who later played a big role in Siya’s career. Even back then, he worked well with younger players, and I realised he could one day become a real statesman.”

Twelve years later, Kolisi is set to play his 100th Test, against France in Paris.

“I’m incredibly proud of Siya, how he has developed as a captain and as an ambassador,” Meyer said. “He’s become a unifying figure for the country, and I’m proud to have played a small part in his journey by selecting him and helping him grow.

“I knew he’d stand out, but not to this extent. It’s incredible that he’s still so humble today.

“He’s always had a great feel for the game, and what makes him such a good captain is that he uses other players’ strengths and isn’t afraid to let them lead in other areas.

“He’s a true team man and a unifier.”
