The man who played a massive role in securing South Africa’s first ever World Cup triumph, celebrates a birthday today.

Joel Stransky turned 58 and will forever be known for how he calmly slotted the match-winning drop goal in the 1995 World Cup final against the All Blacks at Ellis Park, to give South Africa a 15-12 win in extra time.

Stransky also wrote his name in the history books in the opening match of the tournament when he became the first Springbok to score all four possible ways in a Test as he scored a try, a conversion, four penalties and a drop goal to guide South Africa to a 27-18 win over defending champions, Australia.

The former Sharks and WP pivot went on to play 22 Tests and scored six tries.
