The Sharks have filled the vacant attack coach role under head coach JP Pietersen.

According to Rapport, Edinburgh attack coach and former Griquas coach Scott Mathie will return to Durban.

Edinburgh confirmed on Monday that the 43-year-old will leave the club at the end of the season to pursue another opportunity.

The Sharks are expected to formally announce Pietersen as full-time head coach as well as his coaching structure this week.

Pietersen is expected to retain assistants Joey Mongalo, Warren Whiteley and Philip Lemmer, but the Sharks had been searching for a new attack coach to replace Dave Williams, who has taken up a consulting role with the USA Eagles.

Mathie joined Edinburgh in August 2024 from Major League Rugby outfit New England Free Jacks, who he guided to back-to-back MLR titles in 2023 and 2024.

Edinburgh coach Sean Everitt thanked Mathie for his contribution.

“He is a talented coach who has brought a lot of energy and insight to our attacking game since he arrived in Edinburgh,” Everitt said. “Scott still has a lot to contribute over the remainder of the current campaign. We wish him all the best in his next challenge.”

Everitt and Mathie previously worked together at the Sharks, where Everitt held a senior coaching role and Mathie was involved in the junior structures.

Born in Durban, Mathie also represented the Sharks at scrumhalf between 2006 and 2008.
